Sample Application Timelines

NYCTF has a self-paced, rolling admissions process. Applications are reviewed as soon as they are received, regardless of the posted deadline date.  The dates below are tentative guidelines only, and can differ per applicant depending on how quickly applicants respond to messaging and interview invitations from the program office. Please keep in mind that due to staff capacity, interviews can close quickly, and we encourage applicants to sign up for events as soon as they are invited.

In addition, the timeline to process an application can be elongated for candidates who are required to submit other supporting documentation, such as a World Education Services evaluation for foreign degrees. In order to ensure timely receipt of communication from the NYCTF, we encourage all applicants to add “NYC Teaching Fellows” to their Safe Sender list.

Online Application

Applications for the NYC Teaching Fellows are completed electronically. With our easy-to-use online application you can save your work in the online form and return later to complete and submit it. A complete application includes the following:

1. Online application form     2. Resume      3. Transcripts      4. Short answer questions

Please review the Application Preparation Guide to help you prepare your online application.

Please note that you are not required to submit letters of recommendation with your online application.

Candidates with a foreign diploma will be required to upload their transcripts at the time of their application. These transcripts must be reviewed by World Education Services (WES) and submitted to our office before a candidate can be invited to the phone interview.

Phone Interview

A select group of candidates will be invited to participate in a one-on-one Phone Interview with a representative of our program. The Phone Interview gives candidates an opportunity to demonstrate their commitment to an excellent education and equal access for all students. Candidates also have the opportunity to learn more about what it means to be an exceptional teacher in New York City, and describe the skills that make them a great fit for our program. All Phone Interviewers for the NYC Teaching Fellows program are experienced teachers with a demonstrated record of success in NYC public schools, and many are Fellows themselves. After review of your application you may be invited directly to Selection Day and bypass the Phone Interview. Please note that being asked directly to Selection Day is not an indication of your admissions status.

  • Logistics: Candidates choose the time and date for their Phone Interview and can participate in a phone interview from any location. The interview lasts for thirty minutes.
  • Content: During the Phone Interview candidates and interviewers discuss candidates’ beliefs and attitudes about education and a number of scenario-based questions. More information about how to prepare is provided upon invitation to a Phone Interview.
  • Frequency: Phone interviews start late-September and are held several times a week.

Selection Day

A select group of candidates who excel during the Phone Interview will be invited to attend an in-person Selection Day with us in New York City. The Selection Day gives candidates the opportunity to demonstrate their potential to be an effective teacher and their aptitude for learning the essential skills necessary to be a great teacher. All Selection Day staff members are experienced teachers with a demonstrated record of success in NYC public schools, and many are Fellows.

  • Logistics: Candidates choose the time and date for their Selection Day from a variety of dates and times once they are invited to interview. Because of the nature of the day, all candidates must attend the selection day in New York City, and are required to attend within one month of being invited to interview.
  • Content: During the Selection Day candidates teach a five minute mini-lesson and participate in a group activity. The event gives candidates an opportunity to learn essential skills from an experienced teacher, reflect and receive feedback on their teaching sample, and improve their teaching skills. More information about preparing for the Selection Day is provided upon invitation to the Selection Day.
  • Frequency: In-person Selection Days begin mid-October and are held at least twice per week.

Admissions Decisions

Exceptional applicants will be offered acceptance into the Fellows program based on the strength of their application, their interview, their subject area eligibility, and the needs of New York City public schools. Final admissions decisions for the Fall 2016 program will be made on a rolling basis. Learn more about who we look for.
